My Alibaba RC Mower Nightmare

I purchased a remote-controlled mower from Alibaba after searching for suppliers with the fastest travel speed. They advertised 5 mph, so I paid in early spring and waited 2-3 months for it to arrive on June 2nd. What followed was months of frustration, broken parts, and an exhausting dispute process.

What Went Wrong

The mower's electric motors and controllers died about 400 feet from the crate. The specs claimed 900W, but the Chinese controller could only be found on TaoBao listed at around 150W max. The motors ran very hot, and one went open-circuit after it failed. Something was clearly wrong from the moment I gave it full power — I could easily outpace it with a gentle walk.

The Repair Saga

After the supplier sent replacement parts, they didn't just bolt right on. I spent at least 20-25 hours of my own time getting the new motors and controllers installed, including a trip to a machinist to reduce a spindle diameter. Then the remote raise/lower mechanism died, presumably because the end stops were unutilized and the mechanism was binding, combined with shock from hitting sticks and stones while mowing trails and large patches on my 75-acre property.

I had to spend more time researching and then welding on bottle jacks in place of the electric linear actuators. Then the new motors were too power-hungry and killed the battery, leaving the mower stuck. That led to even more research and ultimately adding a beefier alternator — a 24V 100A unit from a school bus — plus paying a fabricator around $800 because I ran out of time.

The Dispute

Alibaba basically offered at most $500, and was exhausting to deal with. I tried my credit card company and they were equally exhausting. That dispute triggered Alibaba to retract their offer entirely. By that point I was completely burned out and gave up.

Lesson learned: Be very skeptical of advertised specs on Alibaba, especially for motorized equipment. The underpowered controller caused the initial failures, and even after replacing the motors and controllers, the mower still doesn't reach the advertised 5 mph.
